ACCELERATED FELLOWSHIP COURSE
FOR ADVOCATES AND ATTORNEYS
(Modules 2 and 4)

Introduction

This course is designed specifically for practising Advocates and Attorneys who wish to practise as arbitrators and/or qualify for Fellow (FAArb) status of the Association and for appointment as arbitrators by the Association.  The course extends and expands the knowledge and skills that candidates have acquired as a result of their profession.  In order to complete this course successfully, candidates should be prepared to devote approximately 16 hours per week per module to their studies.

Qualification for Application

The prospective student must be or become a member of the Association and, in addition thereto, he/she must be a practising Advocate or Attorney with at least five years’ experience as such.

Course Structure

The course consists of the Law and Practice of Arbitration, International Arbitration and Evidence, and Award Writing.  The Association’s courses will be presented exclusively online through the e‑Learning Portal.

Any person wanting to undertake the course may apply by completing and submitting the application form through the link below. Students will therefore be required to have access to a stable uninterrupted Internet connection and possess the ability to type in order to be able to download the course material, submit the compulsory assignments, receive communications from the Association, and write the online exams.

Course Syllabus

Module 2

  • Law and Practice of Arbitration:  Introduces a candidate to the law and practice of arbitration in South Africa, including relevant legislation and procedures used in conducting an arbitration and making an enforceable award.

Module 4

  • Law and Practice of Arbitration (advanced):  Covers the law and practice of arbitration in more detail and includes the principles of the law of evidence, international arbitration practice and the writing of arbitration awards.

Workshops and Seminars

The Accelerated Course is an online correspondence course and, as such, no formal lectures will be presented.  During the year students are required to attend:

  • 2 compulsory online workshops for Module 2;
  • 2 compulsory online workshops for Module 4A (Award Writing); and
  • 4 compulsory online workshops, including a compulsory two-day online workshop, for Module 4B (The Law and Practice of Arbitration, International Arbitration and Evidence).

The course fees include the cost of these workshops.

Examinations

Examinations will be written online annually during October and November.  The Module 2 examination is closed book.  The Module 4 examination consists of 2 papers, both of which are open book.

Fees

The fees (inclusive of VAT) are: R40 000.00.

The course material will only be made available to students upon proof of full payment.
